Page 1
Mother Mary Memorial Medical Centre is committed to bringing either spiritual and physical health or well-being to the target communities through provision of quality, affordable and accessible health services
The medical Centre operates in pursuit of good of the individual person of the sick and the common good of the people. Its services are committed to a holistic approach in healing by treating, preventing diseases and promoting health.
The Medical Centre works in co-operation with other actors in health care provision, including government, in line with the standing laws and regulations. In the provision of its services, the hospital does not discriminate on the ground of religious or political affiliation, race, ethnic origin, gender, social status, or income. A preferential option for the poor is pursued
The Medical Centre operates in line with government policies and is a Not-For-Profit organization. Surpluses generated in the course of operation are not to the owner or to the Management, but are utilized for the improvement of the medical centre’s services
The Medical Centre is a 100 bed Private Not for Profit (PNFP) health unit and provides the minimum health care package comprehensive of curative, preventive, promotive and rehabilitative care, to the community in Kikonzo, Kasese municipality. Specialized services are: - X-rays, Ultrasound, Functional ART clinic, Voluntary Counseling and Testing on a daily basis , PMTCT, Hypertensive and Diabetics Mellitus clinics. Antenatal clinic, Dental services, the medical Centre now has an independent operation theater to be opened in February 2019, though at the moment minor surgeries are being done
The proposed project will respond to needs identified around Kikonzo rail way ward. This project target area is located in south of Kasese municipality. Although the central is relatively well served, this area on the contrary is one of the most underserved, only accessed by poor dirt roads. The neighboring communities have no access to electricity, safe water and adequate social services. The population has been estimated by the Uganda Population and Housing census at approximately 50,000 with an annual growth rate of 3.2%.
The proposed project area is characterized by high disease rates, reportedly high child morbidity and mortality rates, some of those rates resulting from immunizable diseases, owing to limited health facilities and outreach services supported by government or nongovernmental organizations. The number of deliveries by skilled personnel (proportion of supervised deliveries to those who attend antenatal) is 32%, The number of pregnant mothers receiving antenatal and postnatal care is 34% , The contraceptive prevalence rate/number of mothers practicing family planning is 50% , The infant mortality rate is at 76/1000, The less than 5 mortality rate is 145/1000, The maternal mortality rate stands at 505/100000. Leading causes of death for infants/children include preventable illnesses such as malaria, lower respiratory tract infections and diarrhea. Causes of maternal mortality include hemorrhage, infections, pre-eclampsia and eclampsia and complications due to malaria, anemia and pregnancy in very young and older women. In addition to health facilities being a distant 20 kilometers away, they are also severely understaffed. At the present time none of the two health facilities are supervised by a Medical Assistant. In the most isolated cases medical services are primarily provided by nursing aides (European Development Fund, 2008). Because of the limited qualifications of staff in many health facilities, many patients from the sub-dispensaries are referred, when necessary, to Kilembe hospital (25 kilometers away) or Mbarara hospitals, approximately 107kms away. It is therefore not uncommon for communities to seek transport support from the Centre (sometimes at night) to refer mothers in obstetric emergencies to hospital . Those who fail to mobilize transport suffer quietly and some even die. We hear of several cases from time to time.
